That stuff is cool, and pricey! I have considered it and I can see for sure using it on the sides below the binding.
I wanted a wider look. The shell I used was just under .120" wide.
I imagine the look of the zipflex might not match the look of the shell I used so mixing the two sources probably wouldn't be the best however.

Thanks for the prompt reply! Good information.......I'll ponder this a while and go for it. Do you purchase the fiber sheets and then cut them into strips for pinstriping? All of Kens binding tools look good.....hand-held and otherwise. Which do you think is the best as far as (near) fault free? Maybe i should ask ken?

I have heard nothing but good things about Zipflex, other than the price! One advantage, if time is a concern, is that you don't need the extra step of using the teflon strips like Kevin shows here. I enjoyed making the abalone pieces fit the channel when I did my two abalone purfled guitars. Purfled...heh heh heh. Anyway, The bigger my children get, the less time I have for building guitars, so I may give the ZipFlex a try one day.
An option is to get a group buy going and then the price can be negotiated down with AST. A bunch of OLF people did this a couple of years ago and they ended up getting the strips for something like $16 a strip...which is comparable to real shell or abalam.

Tony if you can be the group buy facilitator I would certainly purchase a few strips at that price point -- how many are needed for a top?

The group buy on the OLF was a couple of hundred strips. It takes 4 strips to do the soundboard purfling. I can contact AST to find out how many strips we would need to buy to get to $16-17 per strip. We can also start a thread to gauge interest. I'll do both now.
