Tim, how do you find that Safe-T-Planer to set up? How much tolerance can you stand with it if it's not drop dead on center? Is it forgiving in any way, or do you need to be special careful with it?
It looks like a very handy thing to have if one doesn't have a thickness sander.

One question - is the grain on the tailblock vertical? Doesn't it make it more difficult to trim the block if need be?

Ah. It has always seemed to me that the vertical grain on the endblock makes sense as a preventer of possible splits on the sides. I guess the little bit of extra effort to trim the endgrain just is not a big deal.

I have a drill press table I use with it that needed the circular indent sanded out to allow the planer to cut to the edge. I use precision space blocks to measure the thickness I want and give my self about .01 extra thickness on the last cut so I can sand flat (I have a thickness sander). I use it to take off the bulk but it leaves circular lines that are slightly uneven and need to be sanded out.
