Here's my thickness measurer. Scrap plywood, a round headed carriage bolt, and a dial indicator. No lifting lever, but it does just fine for the occasional guitar wood that I thickness sand.

Stephen Boone did a tutorial for making your own wood version of this tool for cutting rosette slots and sound holes.

Nope, never made a banjo rim from yew. Never heard that it might have some musical properties or interesting grain.

Pricey, but worth it. I love mine. Since I've gotten it, I haven't used my card scrapers at all. No more filing and turning an edge. The Carruth edges last longer. I've redone the hollow grind a couple of times on my grinder.
