Hi Robert... I've seen a couple of four piece backs... they turned out very nice. Another one had a three piece configuation but with the center "wedge" made up of five or six smaller wedges of different colorful types of wood, if you can picture that. It was beautiful! As to book-matches,...

There's little I can add to your very good technique. I've been using shellac to fill...adding coats and sanding back. If I can figure out how to keep the TO from drying into a too pasty texture too quickly while sanding I intend to try your slurry method.
