Update: Padauk J-185 w/Piano Soundboard Top
Note: I Have taken no offense whatsoever to anyone's comments. Your comments have been entirely logical given your experience with guitar tops. Your comments and assistance has been very much appreciated. I took the Padauk J-185 to Chicago Music Exchange to do a comparison test. My expectations were...

Re: Padauk J-185 w/Piano Soundboard Top
In regards to recording a sound file of the guitar, I actually don't have access to a good microphone. I certainly could make an iPhone video, but that wouldn't really give you an idea of the sound quality. I'll ask Ed and dig around the shop, but I don't think he has any need for a good mic., so I ...

Cheap Side Bending
This is a picture of the side bending fixtures I make. The only thing that's "expensive" is the heating blanket, and the cost of the heating blanket is reduced if you go to McMaster-Carr and purchase them for $93.05, rather than the $160 charged elsewhere. You will need to also purchase a ...

Re: Kathy Matsushita Retired
She's such a wonderful person. We have corresponded a little recently and she's really excited about getting into lutherie full time rather than just during her summers away from the classroom. She's such an excellent educator. I love her website.

Re: What new luthiery thing did you try last year and did it
I second the fret erasers. I got these and they are much less clumsy.
I also got the new LMI fretboard clamp. Much easier than making my own for each scale length... something I posted here earlier in the year.

Re: Padauk J-185 w/Piano Soundboard Top
In regards to comments about runout in the spruce, there really is no way to control that if you consider the limitations on the process mentioned above. Those who make piano soundboards (we make them in the shop where I work) pay NO attention to the way the grain pattern on one board matches the on...
