Re: Cutting up a billet of ribbon sapele for resawing

Good job, Kevin. We've enjoyed the wood slicer blades for resawing. None of the other blades we have tried even come close to leaving such a smooth surface, so less thickness is lost to sanding. They don't last a long time, but the results are worthwhile. By the way, I am very jealous of people who ...

Re: HF workmate type thing $20

Hey, Dave,
What does HF call their workmate-type thing? I want to look at it. There is a used workmate for sale locally, but they want $30 for it, so I should compare with the HF one.

Re: Taylor Top Routing

Thanks. No hurry, of course, but I'm curious just how thin they make that wood. Assuming the top shown in your picture was about 0.01, that groove looks fairly deep.

Re: Busy weekend

True, that. I'll agree that it's inconclusive, though I'd guess it's cedar, for several reasons.

It would be nice to hear some instruments made with DF tops. I suspect that it's just fine, but spruce has a historical advantage.

Re: Busy weekend

You're suggesting that Tony's door is made from Douglass Fir tops?

I wouldn't use it for guitars, Tony. What would happen if someone accidentally pressed the button on the garage door opener?

Re: Busy weekend

That's not Douglass Fir. I live in Oregon, where we have a lot of it. That is cedar or redwood. During the 50's there was a lot of redwood cut on the california coast (also near me). Those giant trees grew slowly and had really tight grain. Maybe you have redwood, Tony!

Re: Taylor Top Routing

I'll take the stinky one. In my brother's shop there is a real nice band saw. Trouble is, it's always got "the wrong blade" on, usually a wide one for resawing. I would love a table top model with a nice thin blade for tops, sides... regardless of the smell. I'm curious about the thickness...
