Rims too thin or not?
Rims too thin or not?
Indian Rosewood rims and aiming for a rim thickness of around 0.085”. Unfortunately, by the time I sanded out all the surfaces imperfections I’ve ended up with 0.07” to 0.075”. Question: should I scrap them and start again or carry on, fit internal ribs and hope for the best? Just don’t want to spend a lot time building only to find it’s not structurally sound. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Carry on, the rims are fine. Adding the internal ribs are a good idea, but I am ok with side .07 -.08. >07 is easier to bend!

Thanks for advice John, much appreciated. Just one thing, with rims that thin, I’m going to have to route the rim away and go into the Kerfing to get the depth for the binding - would there be an issue doing that?

For what it's worth, I've just had this condition show up. I had a scrap side which I cut up into kerfing-wide strips. Used them as doublers inside. Worked out nice.

Just wondering if it’s ok to route the rim away completely for the binding and go into the Kerfing?

Yep, you can route the rim away completely, and even go a wee bit into the kerfing. As little as possible, of course. If your rims are at .070" for example, and your binding is .080" or so, you will not have a problem.

Great news, thanks Dave.
