Here's an idea to expand on Peter's added layer of lining. If the side braces were the same material or thickness as the added layer, the bracing could go back to top and the strip of added lining pieced between them. The next layer of kerfed liner would make a pretty ridged edge especially if it was reversed kerf liner. I've done this and added two more layers of side material to make solid liners.
