fretting a finished neck

Post by peter havriluk » Wed Nov 21, 2018 12:13 am

I'm looking for comments and advice as to how to install frets in a fingerboard attached to a finished neck. I thought it reasonable to ask around before forging forward all by myself. Those frets in the 'shadow' of the heel have my attention right now.

Thanks!

Is the neck attached to the body? Different technique required if it is.

I just support the extension on a block when hammering the frets on the extension. For the rest on the neck I use a soft five pound diving weight on a block under the neck while I am setting the frets. I place the heel down on a soft surface when setting the frets above the heel.

Another good reason, in my experience, to use the fret barber from stewmac. It comes in very handy in a surprising number of situations.
