How would you handle this?

Post by Dave Bagwill » Sun Sep 21, 2014 10:33 pm

I'm wondering how a fella/gal would handle the headblock situation - that treble side rim where it joins the headblock specifically.
One way would be to cut a slit in the block to inlet the rim, then glue a piece to cover that side of the block, but it seems like it might be tricky business to make that look right.

Any ideas?

I would bend the side so the it ran up the block. Like the last curve of a Venetian cutaway. Looks like it would not be too hard of a bend. There would be a rounded bend but I think it would look better than some sort of right angle joint.

I tend to agree with you John. Since the sides will be 'doubled' - 2X .045" - the bend will be easy, and will no doubt look a lot cleaner.

I can make tight bends with the 'lams', so it really does not throw off the lines of the instrument much to slope it up the headblock. The whole point of the configuration of course is to give cutaway access without the cutaway. Matter of taste, I'm drawn to it a bit.

I think Breedlove has done something similar to your drawn in curve there Dave. I always thought they looked pretty cool.

This is my current favorite cutaway transition -- elegant no tight curves
