Somewhere in the shop I have a 16" contoured drum sander worked good (but not as good as a CNC machine) my fixture was surprisingly similar in design. Since has been disassembled and parts repurposed.

The router bit fixture is clever, I wonder if there are 16" radius bits. The problem I see, is that there is a right and wrong direction to feed material through a planer to prevent chip outs -- so at least half the board is at risk. Too, the folks that do this commercially simply will not try and process certain woods. From that perspective the abrasive unit would be the better choice if considering making the effort to build a machine.
