Something I've always done is have my herringbone purfling run reverse directions on either side or the guitar-- I like to have the "Vee's" point at each other at the tail block. Martin does it the opposite.

What's your thoughts?

That's an understated bit of detail which I think would please an observer no end once they noticed. How do the chevrons meet at the rear? Offhand (yes, I know all my taste is in my mouth) the chevrons meeting in a diamond back-to-back would also be an attractive bit of detail, but that means the chevrons point away from each other...I never thought to look at a Martin to see how they dealt with the convergence.

I make them the Martin way. Pointing to the top, as I do with the grain direction of the plates, has my preference. But as always, it's a matte rof taste IMO.
The guys who wanted my guitars, always had Martin as a holy grail starting point. Had to make a lot of effort/talking before they are willing to make their own design. So traditional, this guitar thing.
