Birdseye Maple

Post by Kevin in California » Tue Jan 05, 2016 6:40 pm

My local wood vendor has a beautiful 8/4 billet of birdseye maple, and when I was there last Saturday I neglected to see if it was quarter sawn. My understanding is if the birdseyes are showing, it will NOT be quarter sawn.
My question is how well will this work for acoustic back and sides? I know quarter sawn is preferred. I've not bent any maple yet, although I have a set of ambrosia maple that I don't think is quartered either.

I love Bird's Eye for D35 center panels, wedges, head-stock veneer. I did some trial bends and that simply did not go well.

I have a stash of .060" birdseye that I plan on laminating into sides; it's really attractive wood.

I just heard a classical with birdseye maple and german spruce top, and it sounds fabulous.
I think I'm going for it.
