FWIW: I always follow the SM recipe to make the first cut in "quaters" (in fact in 8ths) and a final cut couter clockwise. Never had chipping out. Herman I do the same and that's the way i teach it in my guitar building classes. Very rarely get chip out but some wood just does. Torrified ...

Gluing it flat will save you a whole lot of aggravation especially if this is your first.

I would say the glue is OK. Mine is older and still going strong, I keep it in a cool location. As far as finish goes, many times I just glue up and call it good. If it really needs some lacquer I air brush some on after I have taped off for over spray.

I've reglued a number of backs on guitars of that type Kevin. I don't use CA, I use fish glue. Fish glue has a great open time and cleans up easily with warm water and a damp paper towel. I either work the glue into the seam with a palette knife or spread some glue across the separation and work/for...
